“Jews and Music in Medieval Spain and Portugal”
Monday September 1, 6pm, Miss Lou’s Room, Free
Would Jewish musicians and singers in medieval Spain and Portugal recognize the most beloved songs in today’s Ladino repertoire? How old are Sephardic songs? How much music did Jewish, Muslim and Christian musicians share? Ethnomusicologist and singer Dr Judith Cohen, recently returned from Spain, Portugal and Morocco, takes us back through the centuries to the medieval Iberian kingdoms, and the role of Jews in their thriving music scenes.
