The Ashkenaz School of Music

The Ashkenaz School of Music features a variety of programs taking place both year-round and as part of the biennial Asheknaz Festival. Comprised of workshops, master classes, lectures, ongoing music classes, and community ensembles, these programs increase opportunities for people, especially youth, to engage in music and arts learning. Participants cultivate fluency not only within the styles and art forms central to our own organizational practice, but also within diverse cultural styles. Hands-on musical experiences like the Fellowship of the Strings workshop and ongoing mandolin classes provide our students the opportunity to acquire new skills, gain confidence, and experience the joy of learning and playing music with others. The Ashkenaz School of Music is generously supported by TD Bank.

FELLOWSHIP OF THE STRINGS

Before wind and brass instruments began appearing in klezmer ensembles of the late 19th and early 20th century, klezmer music was performed almost exclusively by fidl kapelyes (string orchestras) that featured all members of the violin family, the tsimbl (similar to a hammer dulcimer), and the poyk (percussion). Aiming to recreate the sound of these classic European klezmer ensembles, the Fellowship of the Strings is an exclusive masterclass taking place during the biennial Ashkenaz Festival. Over 3-5 days participants come together under the tutelage of renowned international musicians to develop a set of music to be performed as part of the Festival programming. Previous guest instructors in the Fellowship of the Strings have included Veretski Pass (Josh Horowitz, Cookie Segelstein, Stu Brotman), Steven Greenman, Pete Rushefsky, Stas Ryko, Bob Cohen, and Igor Polesitsky.
