One of Israel’s most exciting world music acts, A-WA(pronounced Ay-Wa)is formed by three sisters who combine the ancient oral history of Yemenite women’s chanting with contemporary funk, electronica and desert grooves. With songs in Hebrew, English and Yemeni-Arabic, Tair, Liron and Tagel Haim are shattering expectations with their fresh and funky sounds marrying disparate influences. Discovered and produced by Tomer Yosef of the pioneering Israeli world music crew Balkan Beat Box, A-WA became a viral sensation with its first music video, “Habib Galbi” which attracted over a million views and went on to become the first-ever Arabic-language song to top the Israeli music charts. A-WA’s warm and genuine music, rooted in the sisters’ own Yemenite-Jewish heritage as much as their fondness for jazz, hip-hop, reggae, and prog rock, breaks through language barriers and cultural boundaries, embracing all generations and walks of life. The group has even developed a following across the Arab world.
