Daniel Kahn Berlin
An intimate set of new and used songs, smuggled over the borders of Yiddish, Russian, German, and English, into unmapped territory. The Painted Bird‘s Berliner-Detroiter frontman will be joined by Riga’s Sasha Lurje for some Strangelovesongs: duets from the dark side. Daniel Kahn- Detroit-born, Berlin-based since 2005, fronts the punk-folk-klezmer band The Painted Bird, and is a founding member of The Unternationale (with Psoy Korolenko), The Brothers Nazaroff (with Psoy, Michael Alpert, Jake Shulman-Ment, Hampus Melin, and Bob Cohen), The Disorientalists, Strangelovesongs (with Sasha Lurje), and Semer Ensemble (with Alan Bern, Lorin Sklamberg, and others). He tours the world as a singer, songwriter, translator and teacher, collaborating with the best of the Yiddish and international folk scenes. At Berlin’s Maxim Gorki Theater he works as a director/playwright (Genghis Cohn), composer/actor (Enemies: A Love Story), and music curator. In 2015 he played Biff in Castillo Theater / New Yiddish Rep’s critically-acclaimed and Drama Desk Award-nominated off-Broadway Toyt fun a Salesman (Death of a Salesman in Yiddish) in New York.
