Istanbul’s Janet and Jak Esim are among the greatest performers and researchers of Ladino song in the world today. Most of the music they perform has been collected by Jak Esim over the course of four decades, making them the sole performers of a unique and mostly unknown repertoire in Sephardic music. This vast canon includes songs from across the Sephardic diaspora of the Mediterranean and Middle East – romances, ballads, songs of longing and sadness and songs of joy. This repertoire was often shaped by the influence of lands in which exiles found new homes, but always rooted deep in the psyche of Medieval Spain. Joined by some of Turkey’s finest contemporary musicians, the Esims present this unique repertoire in the polyphonic style of their sources and with a deep commitment to authenticity. Also featuring Oray Yay and Bekir Sahin Baloglu.
