The Mayors of Sambor Winnipeg
From Winnipeg comes the latest project from brothers Myron and Victor Schultz, two of the founding members of Canada’s first klezmer revival group, Finjan (founded 1982). In this latest incarnation, the clarinet- and violin-playing brothers are keeping it in the family by teaming up for the first time with pianist sister Erica, to explore their mutual roots in both classical music as well as east European folk traditions. The group derives its name from the city of Sambor, Poland – the birthplace of the siblings’ father. Loosely translating their surname Schultz to mean a ‘leader or town mayor,’ the Mayors of Sambor pay homage to their father and their personal histories with a program that sits somewhere between the shtetl and the concert hall. They are also joined by an honourary Schultz, their longtime Finjan bandmate, Daniel Koulack.
