BEYOND NATION: JEWS, ROMA AND “EUROPEAN” MUSIC
For centuries, the Jewish and Romani people have played a unique and indispensable role in creating and transmitting European musical culture, including their own distinguished traditions. And yet, as minority communities in multiple nations, their centrality in European musical culture is often overlooked or even omitted, particularly when those musical traditions are defined by nationality alone. Complex histories, scarred by segregation, persecution, and genocide, underscore the “otherness” of Jews and Roma people in the European context, and complicate understanding their critical role in east European musical life. As BLOK seeks to promote musical exchange between North America and Eastern Europe, how are Jewish and Romani musicians and musical styles to be considered? What challenges and opportunities exist to provide these communities the representation they so richly deserve.
