Ashkenaz is pleased to partner with Virtual J to present the Canadian launch of Matzah Ball Books’ seventh publication, Bubbe & Zaide. This online event will include a reading of the book by its creator, Anne-Marie Asner, joined by special guest reader, famed actor Ed Asner (no relation). The reading will be followed by Q&A with the author/illustrator of this much-loved picture book series (over 60,000 in print).
Matzah Ball Books was created in 2004 to give young children understanding of and affinity for Yiddish words and idioms. These colorful and humorous picture books put the fun and funny of Yiddish words and expressions into a form young people adore. Written in English, each Matzah Ball Book is named for a character with a Yiddish word that describes a central attribute of his or her personality. In each book the protagonist learns a lesson connected with his or her namesake trait. For example, Kvetchy Boy learns when to complain and when not to; Shluffy Girl learns there is a time and place for most everything, including napping; and Noshy Boy learns which snacks are healthy and which are less so. Other titles in the series include Shmutzy Girl, Klutzy Boy, and Hanukkah with Noshy Boy & Friends. Two new titles, Kibbitzy Girl and Shleppy Boy, are set to be released following Bubbe & Zaide in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The latest release is particularly well-suited to these times, as author Asner explains: “Given current coronavirus stay-at-home policies, more than ever we need a book about the importance of grandparents to their grandkids and vice versa. Not having access to Bubbe and Zaide is the hardest part of social isolation on my kids and my parents.”
For the past sixteen years, Anne-Marie Asner has toured festivals and headlined events, reading to and entertaining thousands of kids with her lively and humorous characters and stories. Asner was born in Toronto, raised in San Diego and lives in Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles, Jewish Life News, Jewish Book World, San Diego Jewish Journal, Association of Jewish Libraries, JBooks and more. Asner holds a Masters Degree in Psychology from Brandeis University. She is one of five grandchildren to her Yiddish-speaking bubbe.
Ed Asner is a legendary actor, voice actor, and a former president of the Screen Actors Guild. He is primarily known for his role as Lou Grant during the 1970s and early 1980s, on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off series Lou Grant. He is the most honored male performer in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards, having won seven, five for portraying Lou Grant and the others for performances in two of the most significant mini-television series of the 1970s: Rich Man, Poor Man (1976) and Roots (1977), for which he won for Outstanding Single Performance by a Supporting Actor in a TV series. More recently, he portrayed Santa Claus in the Will Ferrell tour de force Elf (2003), and he starred as the voice of Carl Fredricksen in Pixar’s animated film Up (2009).
