Though it’s an odd-numbered (ie. non-festival) year, and we’re still living in the shadow of the pandemic, we are not going to let that stop us from bringing you a taste of Ashkenaz on Labour Day weekend! These two virtual concerts pay tribute to our history and to our past artistic leaders, with beautifully filmed pre-recorded performances, viewable for free on Facebook and YouTube.
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 4, 9pm
A brand new concert of Yiddish songs performed by Mitchell Smolkin (Ashkenaz Artistic Director from 2000-2006) and Nina Shapilsky. Mitch will mine repertoire drawn from or inspired by his longtime connections with Ashkenaz, including selections from some of his most memorable performances at past festivals. Captured in an idyllic lakeside setting, these two great artists will bring you a dose of sweet Yiddishkayt. Co-presented with UJA’s Committee For Yiddish and Kultura Collective.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 5, 9pm
An exciting set by David Buchbinder’s Odessa/Havana, recorded with a small live audience at Lula Lounge. David is of course Ashkenaz’s founding Artistic Director (1995-2000), and this streamed performance takes place almost 15 years to the day since the world premiere of Odessa/Havana, originally commissioned for the 2006 Ashkenaz Festival by Smolkin when he was AD. Co-presented with Lula Lounge and Small World Music.
