Socalled’s “The Golem”
October 29, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Just in time for Halloween, Montreal’s Socalled will present a live soundtrack to the classic 1920 silent horror film version of “The Golem,” written and directed by Paul Wegener. Based on an ancient folktale, the story of the Golem is most often described as a Jewish version of Frankenstein (though it predates Mary Shelley’s classic monster myth by over two centuries, and the stories differ significantly enough). Set in Prague, Socalled developed a live soundtrack to the film some ten years ago in that very city, where his grandmother’s family was from. Most recently seen in Toronto with Abraham Inc as part of the 2016 Ashkenaz Festival, Josh “Socalled” Dolgin is a pianist, accordionist, producer, journalist, photographer, filmmaker, magician, cartoonist and puppet maker based in Montreal. He has lectured and led master classes in music festivals around the world, from Moscow to Paris, from London to LA, and from Krakow to San Francisco, and has performed on every continent for almost 20 years. Nominated for two Junos, Socalled’s list of collaborators knows no generational, social, cultural or religious boundaries.
