Lara St. John & Matt Herskowitz New York City/Montreal

Monday September 3 , 5:00pm - 6:15pm
Harbourfront Centre Theatre

“Lavuta: Violin Without Borders”

Canadian-born violinist Lara St. John has been described as “something of a phenomenon” (The Strad), a “volcanic violinist” (LA Times) and a “high-powered soloist” (NY Times). The JUNO-award winner has performed as soloist with many of the world’s top orchestras, and is particularly renowned for her recordings and performances of Bach. But Lara has also been a longtime collector of music from Eastern Europe, beginning with her first trip to Hungary at 11 years old. Three years ago Lara teamed up with Montreal jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz for the album “Shiksa,” an eclectic collection of music drawn from the Jewish diaspora and related East European traditions from Russia, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece, Romania and Hungary. Shedding the formality of the classical concert stage, this program allows Lara to display her spectacular technique and improvisational prowess, while Herskowitz shines as her counterpart. In its review of the album, All About Jazzraved: “music like this is beyond imagination and talent. It exists only in the loosely-held molecules found on the razor’s edge of Creation.”
