Slichot are both the penitential prayers and poems associated with the period before Rosh Hashana (the Jewish new year), as well as the name for the service that falls at this time in the Jewish calendar. This participatory and experiential event will explore the mysteries of the Slichot service through a fusion of music, chanting, poetry and prayer.Under the direction of award-winning musician and Ba’alat Neginah(prayer leader) Aviva Chernick, an ensemble of prayer leaders, vocalists and instrumentalists will bring together the diverse sounds of Chazzanut, Sephardic folk, Jazz, Indian Classical, Chassidic Chamber music, and Persian Percussion, in a truly unique artistic and spiritual experience. The ensemble will include the voices and leadership of Aviva Rajsky (Congregation Habonim) and Chazzan Ben Silverberg (Beth Torah), and instrumentalists Justin Gray (bass), Yoni Kaston (accordion), Ernie Tollar (flutes and woodwinds) and Naghmeh Farahmand (percussion).Come prepared to close your eyes and listen or to open your mouth and sing along.Whatever your experience with Jewish prayer, all are welcome to this rare Ashkenaz presentation.
