AvevA Dese “AfroSoul”

Mar 23 - 2017

Canadian Premiere

Ethiopian-Israeli singer/songwriter AvevA Dese, is a rising star in the Israeli music scene. Aveva’s music features stimulating African groove with a touch of the fresh urban beat of Tel Aviv. As a child of Jewish parents, who faced struggle and persecution to come from Ethiopia to Israel, Aveva brings a unique life story that is conveyed through her music. In her show, “AvevA – AfroSoul”, you will discover powerful texts, both in English and Amharic, about our society, love, and the endless search for freedom. Combined with traditional Ethiopian sounds the music creates a fascinating intercultural connection.

Presented in association with Small World Music and Batuki Music Society, and generously sponsored by Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation, Size Doesn’t Matter and Consulate General of Israel.

The Barnes/Woldemichael EthioJazz QuartetDrawing on classic Ethiopian Jazz repertoire and adding new original compositions to the mix, this Toronto based collaboration deals out a deep groove that enchants its audience with the distinctive sound and vibe of Ethiopia. Drummer and Composer Daniel Barnes spent the 1990’s touring internationally and recording with two iconic vocalists Ms. Aster Aweke (Aster “Live in London”) and Mr. Mahmoud Ahmed (Mahmoud’s “Tizita”). On these tours he first worked with saxophonist Girma Woldemichael, who, though now based in Toronto, hails from Addis Ababa and played there full time during the “Golden Age’ of Ethiopian Music. This illustrious pair will be joined by bassist Rich Brown and keyboardist Jeremy Ledbetter.
