Canada is home to one of the most active Yiddish music scenes in the world, with especially deep roots in Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto. This scene has been nurtured for decades by institutions like the revered Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre and events like KlezKanada, Mameloshen Festival, Chutzpah Festival and of course the Ashkenaz Festival, North America’s largest celebration of Yiddish and Jewish music and art. Since 1995, Ashkenaz has brought the international Yiddish culture revival to Canada, and in turn, has helped stoke the development of a homegrown artistic scene that, as in all things Canadian and Jewish, punches above its weight in the world. This Canada Day edition of “Yiddish Song: Step Forverts” will kick off a summer-long virtual celebration of Ashkenaz’s 25th anniversary and of Yiddish music in Canada.
This program is generously sponsored by the Shloima & Yetta Steinhart Memorial Fund for Yiddishkeit, and the Simcha and Freda Simchovitch Fund for Yiddish Education and Culture, both at the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto.
