McKay Art Centre, 197 Main St. Unionville, ON

As part of our York Region Initiative, Ashkenaz is proud to bring some of Toronto’s leading Jewish roots music artists to festivals and venues in the 905 area.

Toronto’s Beyond the Pale is an award-winning Canadian ensemble and well known touring band in the international Klezmer, Balkan and folk/world music scenes. The group has been making its distinctive brand of boundary-busting Eurofolk fusion for nearly 18 years, mixing Klezmer, Balkan, and Romanian styles with an eclectic range of North American influences. They have played major festivals, theatres and clubs across Canada, the US, Europe, Australia and Brazil, including such notables as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Melbourne’s BMW Edge Theatre, and the Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Poland. The group has released three acclaimed CDs, receiving five nominations and three wins from the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Beyond the Pale’s members are some of the most highly-regarded musicians in Canada’s folk, jazz, and world music scenes, including Bret Higgins (bass), Aleksandar Gajic (violin), Milos Popovic (accordion), Eric Stein (mandolin), and Martin van de Ven (clarinet).

Celebrating its 18th year in 2015, the Markham Jazz Festival  is one of the finest community jazz Festivals in Canada. Its adventurous programming incorporates diverse and eclectic jazz and world music performers from across Canada and round the world. The Festival takes place on multiple stages along main street in Unionville, providing a quaint, intimate and family-friendly environment to hear exciting music.
