REEL Ashkenaz @ the Toronto Jewish Film Festival
THE KOMEDIANT (1999)
Directed by Arnon Golfinger
Available for online viewing at the TJFF virtual cinema June 16-26
TJFF presents the Canadian Premiere of the new restoration of the classic film by Arnon Golfinger (The Flat)–perhaps the best documentary ever made about the Yiddish theatre. The late Pesach’ke Burstein was one of the most acclaimed Yiddish theatre actors of his day. His compulsive drive to succeed, supported by his actress wife Lillian Lux, adversely affected his family. Daughter Susan felt compelled to leave the acting profession entirely and Pesach’ke’s equally famous son, Mike Burstyn (star of the Kuni Lemel films), angered his father when he sought fame beyond the Yiddish theatre. Susan Burstein-Roth, Mike Burstyn, Lillian Lux and actor Fyvush Finkel (A Serious Man) are among those interviewed in this lively and revealing slice of Jewish history.
“Absolutely wonderful.” (Mel Brooks)
“This marvellous film chronicles a time that was a part of all our lives.” (Carl Reiner)
